A client in Pinjarra Hills, the leafy riverside suburb tucked between Bellbowrie and Pullenvale in Brisbane’s west, had a brick retaining wall that had seen better days. Over time it had failed and fallen apart, and the surrounding area had become overgrown and neglected — a corner of the property that had essentially been written off.
The Cornerstone Boulder Walls team came in, demolished and removed the old failed wall, cleared the area, and got to work.
The replacement is a natural sandstone block retaining wall ranging between two and three blocks in height, following the natural slope of the ground. Complementing the wall is a set of six diamond cut steps — clean, precise, and built to last.
Why Brick Retaining Walls Fail
Brick retaining walls can look solid for years, but they have a fundamental weakness: they’re not built to handle the constant pressure of soil and water behind them. Over time, that pressure causes movement, mortar joints crack, and once water gets in and the freeze-thaw cycle does its work, deterioration accelerates. In South East Queensland’s wet seasons, poorly drained retaining walls don’t last as long as they should.
When a brick wall reaches this point, patching is rarely the right answer. The underlying cause — inadequate drainage, insufficient wall thickness, or simply a wall type that wasn’t suited to the job in the first place — doesn’t go away with a coat of render.
