Sandstone Retaining Walls for Caloundra Gardens Retirement Village
This project is an extension of the established Caloundra Gardens Retirement Village, on Mark Rd West in Little Mountain, on the western edge of Caloundra. The block falls away from Caloundra Road in the south down to Mark Rd West in the north, and every dwelling on the extension is being built on its own terrace cut into that slope.
Retaining that many terraced levels calls for a mix of wall types. The smaller retaining walls across the site are being built from concrete sleepers on steel columns, while Cornerstone Boulder Walls has been engaged to build the two major structural walls in premium grade sandstone.
The Upper Wall: Interlocking Sandstone Sections
The wall closest to the Caloundra Road end of the property retains the ground of several adjoining properties, so it’s being built in a series of interlocking sections rather than one continuous run. At its tallest it reaches 4 metres, all constructed from premium grade sandstone slabs.
These photos show the early stages on one of the wall’s sections: excavation down to a stable base, footings prepared, and the first courses of sandstone going in.
Next Up: The Major Middle Wall
Work continues section by section on the upper wall. Once it’s complete, attention turns to the largest structure in the project — a sandstone retaining wall running east-west across the middle of the property, standing over 5 metres tall.
